36 Fragments is an exhibition focusing on the exposure of early adulthood. "36" referring to the amount of exposures on a roll of film, and "fragments" referring to a piece of every person's life during University. The exhibition questions the stereotypical approach that teenagers have about University by portraying both the loud and quiet aspects of being a student. The exhibition exists to allow future students to experience University life through a different perspective. Niko’s work responds to the theme of early exposure to adulthood through bringing attention to identity changes throughout university, feeling the need to change as well as experimenting with one’s appearance. Situated in the bathroom where a lot of these self-reflections take place, Niko’s photographs portray mirrored images of impulsive change and the emotional aspect of societal pressures to fit in. Niko chose to display the work to mimic a sink with a mirror, using a plinth with bathroom items to add a further interactive element.The exhibition, shown in Terrace NQ, is hosted in an upstairs area of a popular pub. The area where the work is displayed mimics the layout of a house, making the audience walk through every room to simulate a university student accommodation.
Niko’s photographic practice derives heavily from Petra Collins’ work "24hr Psycho", a project focused on teenage experiences growing up. Using bright lighting and intricate makeup to create an emotional tone, Niko’s work responds by creating a similar aesthetic to reflect the emotional experiences of being a young adult in university.
36 Fragments aims to create a space for people to share experiences and feelings of nostalgia, portraying fragments of every member’s life through both loud rave scenes and quiet emotional moments.
